Cathie Apple: Listen

Cafe 1930

(Cathie Apple and George England)
Astor Piazzolla
There is a saying in Argentina: "Everything changes, except the tango." Astor Piazzolla went against tradition and created the nuevo tango, or "new tango," infusing the traditional tango with everything from strict counterpoint to modern jazz. He turned the tango into something you listened to as well as danced.
Histoire du Tango depicts the history of this iconic dance; from the brothels of Buenos Aires, to Parisian society in Cafe 1930, to New York in Nightclub 1960. The final movement depicts a modern-day concert, writing the performers and audience into tango history.
This track is the first half of Cafe 1930, recorded live at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento, California on May 22, 2009.
